Cheerleading can be found for almost every age group beginning very early with YMCA ball teams, through junior high and high school, and then on to college and professional sports venues. Cheerleaders many times become representatives of their local communities, serving as good will ambassadors at local charity events, fund raisers, as well as cheerleading competitions.
Cheerleaders are now seen as extremely athletic and talented individuals with skills as gymnasts as well as dance skills.
History of Cheerleaders
Here in America cheer leading has become a sport in its own right. There are hundreds of competitions held each year on the local, state, and national levels to choose the best cheer leader teams. While it was originally conceived to be a encouraging focal point to rally a crowd behind a team of university football players, the inclusion of stunts, jumps, dance and tumbling gymnastic moves (and those uniforms); has made it an essential looked forward to part of every game. Cheerleading began in two of the finest Universities in America; Princeton and the University of Minnesota, and with the exuberance of two young men.
On a cold November night in 1898, the University of Minnesota football team was having what looked to be another loss, in a season filled with disappointments. Out of the crowd came the voice of a young male student; Johnny Campbell; with his voice raised above the level of the crowd, he began the first ever on the spot positive chant, and led the crowd to cheer their team on to another loss; but they did it with passion and rousing cheers! One student’s scientific thesis proved that getting the crowd of fans involved with cheering on the team could have positive results. With a method brought from Princeton University in the early 1890’s by a graduate named Tom Peebles, Johnny Campbell led the first cheering session. In 1903 the University of Minnesota created the first male cheerleading squad, and formed the first cheerleading fraternity, Gamma Sigma.
In the beginning only males were allowed to be cheerleaders; it was thought that women’s voices were not pitched suitably to be projected above the noise of cheering crowds of fans. This was the rule until the 1920’s, when women came to cheerleading squads and introduced the now familiar, gymnastics, throwing, tumbling, and pyramid stances. While most Universities and colleges have held onto the traditional fifty-fifty mix of males and females in a squad, lower academic levels are predominantly female.
It was not until the 1960’s that the NFL teams began using cheerleaders as a part of professional football games. The first was the Baltimore Colts, followed by the others as the decade passed. Yet, the fulfillment of every man’s fantasy came about in the 1970’s with the inclusion of cheerleaders in revealing blue and white outfits, dancing suggestively, and everyone of the women as beautiful as any movie star; the famous Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders!
In 1983, the National High School CheerLeading Competition was televised nationwide; and showed the nation that cheerleading was more than looking pretty on Friday nights for the home team. The complexity of the stunts, team dance moves and synchronized cheers showed everyone that being a cheerleader meant hard work, toned muscles, and Olympic level dexterity; and an ability to do it all with a huge smile plastered on their faces.
There are of course the usual naysayers who try to demean the sport, and relegate it to the sexist history books. Yet, celebrating health, beauty, athletic ability, pure joy, and the capacity to enliven a crowd of people into forgetting their troubles for the length of time it takes to win or lose a football game, is an amazingly All-American past-time that is celebrated by millions every year. Aside from the crowds, there are millions of young women and men who are actively involved in cheer leading, and love every moment they are shaking a pom-pom!
What happens next in cheer leading? Well ladies you can go right out, buy some pom-poms, get yourself a cheerleader outfit, and raise the moral in your home; drive your team on to victory; and maybe get your husband off the sofa for your own team sport!
